What Is Lordosis?

Lordosis is a condition that causes an excessive inward spinal curvature. While a small amount of inward curvature is considered normal, excessive curvature is referred to as a swayback. This condition is similar to kyphosis, sometimes called a hunchback.

Lordosis Treatment Los AngelesThe spine normally has two outward and two inward curves that position the head over the pelvis for an upright posture, to absorb shock, and to distribute stress. Lordosis happens when the spine curves too far inward at the cervical spine (cervical lordosis) or the lumbar spine (lumbar lordosis).

This excessive curvature can affect normal movement, place excess pressure on the spine, and cause severe pain.

What Causes Lordosis?

Lordosis can happen at any age. There are a number of spinal conditions that can damage the spine’s integrity and contribute to or cause lordosis, such as:

  • Kyphosis, which can force the lower back to compensate for the excess outward curvature of the upper back.
  • Obesity, which can cause people to lean backward to improve their balance.
  • Osteoporosis, which causes bone loss of the spine and reduced integrity of the vertebrae which damages the integrity of the entire spine.
  • Spondylolisthesis or a slipped vertebra, which happens when one vertebra slips forward.
  • Discitis, or intervertebral disc space inflammation.
  • Whiplash trauma to the cervical spine.
  • Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).

How Is Lumbar Lordosis Treated in Orange County?

Lumbar lordosis treatment begins with strength-building exercises and physical therapy to improve range of motion. Rehabilitation exercises can reverse lumbar lordosis that isn’t too severe.

Only severe cases of lordosis are treated surgically. In this case, techniques such as spinal instrumentation and artificial spinal disc replacement may be recommended.

How Is Cervical Lordosis Treated?

Depending on the cause and severity of cervical lordosis, treatment may include muscle relaxants and pain medications as the most conservative option. A neck collar may also be recommended. Strengthening the muscles through physical therapy can help improve flexibility and range of motion of the neck.

Surgery is only advised in extreme cases of lordosis. Reversal of cervical lordosis may be possible with surgical intervention.

If you are dealing with the pain and reduced range of motion and flexibility that can come from lordosis, call us today to schedule your appointment with Coast Spine and Sports Medicine.
