If you are dealing with the pain and limited function that comes with discitis or osteomyelitis, contact Coast Spine and Sports Medicine for tailored treatments. We welcome men and women in Los Angeles and Orange County, including residents of Santa Ana, Rancho Cucamonga, and Downey.
What Is Discitis?
Discitis is a fairly uncommon form of spinal inflammation that occurs between spinal discs which are located between the vertebrae or bones of the spine. The space where this inflammation occurs is the intervertebral disc space. Swelling can put pressure on discs and nerve roots, which causes pain.
Discitis can cause back stiffness, posture changes, significant pain, and trouble performing tasks. It may also come with abdominal pain and fever.
Discitis and osteomyelitis are two conditions that often occur together. Osteomyelitis is a bone infection that can occur in any bone of the body and is cased by bacteria or fungi. It typically affects long bones of the upper arms and legs in children or the vertebrae of adults. In the case of vertebral osteomyelitis, the infection usually affects the lumbar spine or lower back, but it can also affect the thoracic spine, cervical spine, and—less commonly—the sacrum or base of the spine.
How Much DoestDiscitis Treatment Cost in Los Angeles?
The cost of your discitis treatment will depend on the cause of the inflammation, whether you have co-occurring osteomyelitis, and the extent of the side effects. During your initial appointment at Coastal Spine and Sports Medicine, we will create a personalized treatment plan to address your pain and symptoms and help you understand the cost of your treatment. We accept most forms of insurance in addition to financing through CareCredit®.
What Causes Discitis?
Discitis usually affects younger children under ten. It can also occur in adults, especially those with an autoimmune disorder, weakened immune system, or are recovering from surgery. Discitis is typically caused by a bacterial or viral infection that enters the intervertebral space, usually through trauma or surgery, but it may also be caused by an autoimmune disorder. Both autoimmune response and infection can cause inflammation, swelling, and pain.
What Discitis Treatment Options Do You Offer?
When discitis is caused by a bacterial infection, it can be treated with antibiotics. Surgery is only recommended when antibiotics fail to clear up the infection or when the inflammation causes serious spinal alignment issues that need to be corrected. When caused by an autoimmune disorder, anti-inflammatory drugs can be used.
Steroid injections may be advised if you are dealing with chronic discitis or severe pain. Fortunately, surgery is usually not required to address the problems associated with discitis and osteomyelitis.
