What Is Golfer’s Elbow?

Golfer’s Elbow TreatmentGolfer’s elbow is a common sports injury and a type of tendonitis that causes pain in the tendons of the forearm as they attach to the bone inside the elbow. Also known as medial epicondylitis, this condition is very similar to tennis elbow which affects the outside of the elbow. The pain from golfer’s elbow or baseball elbow happens due to damage such as inflammation, irritation, or small tears to the tendons responsible for bending the wrist.

Golfer’s elbow can be very mild or severe with pain when bending the wrist to the forearm, pain the goes from the inside of the elbow to the pinky finger, and other symptoms such as:

  • Difficulty moving your elbow
  • Weak grip
  • Tingling sensation or numbness from the elbow to the pinky finger
  • Weak wrist
  • Elbow stiffness

What Causes Golfer’s Elbow?

Golfer’s elbow happens due to excessive force when bending the wrist toward the forearm or repetitive strain on the tendon. This common injury doesn’t just affect golfers. It can be the result of:

  • Swinging a golf club
  • Throwing a javelin
  • Rowing
  • Pitching a baseball
  • Carrying heavy baggage
  • Using a tennis racket that’s too short, heavy, or tightly strung
  • Using a spin serve in golf
  • Using a chain saw

Along with athletes, people that perform certain activities at work may also be at a higher risk of medial epicondylitis, including construction workers, plumbers, and assembly line workers.

What Golfer’s Elbow Treatment Options Do You Offer in Orange County, CA?

Golfer’s elbow treatment typically begins with non-surgical and conservative methods such as icing the inner forearm and elbow, anti-inflammatory medication, strength-building exercises, and rest. A golfer’s elbow brace may also be recommended to stabilize the elbow and prevent excess movement while the tendon heals.

Steroid injections can sometimes be helpful to reduce inflammation and ease pain, although they aren’t a long-term solution. PRP therapy can also help chronic tendon injuries heal by concentrating your body’s healing mechanisms at the site of the injury.

While rare, sometimes golfer’s elbow requires surgery. Medial epicondyle release surgery is used to remove a damaged portion of tendon before reattaching the healthy tendon.

Golfer’s elbow may heal on its own without treatment, but this doesn’t always happen.
