What Is a Tumor?

A spinal tumor is an abnormal tissue mass that’s located adjacent to or within the spinal column or spinal cord. As with other types of tumors, spinal tumors may be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous), but they can be concerning either way, as the growth can compress nerve roots and the spinal cord.

Spinal tumors are very uncommon but they can happen to anyone. Most people who develop tumors of the spine have a history of other cancers. In fact, most tumors of the spinal cord have spread from cancer somewhere else in the body, particularly the breast, lung, or prostate. A spinal tumor is a type of central nervous system tumor. While most CNS tumors occur in the brain, about 10 percent occur in the vertebrae, spinal cord, and surrounding tissue.

  • Abnormal gait
  • Loss of one’s sense of position in space (proprioception)
  • Paralysis to some degree
  • Scoliosis
  • Loss of bladder or bowel function

What Spinal Tumor Treatment Options Do You Offer in Orange County?

Even benign tumors of the spine need to be treated, as they can cause disabling symptoms and pain. Many factors will determine the best treatment for a spinal tumor, including its location, prognosis, and involvement of vertebrae.

For a fbenign tumor that does not cause symptoms and does not seem to be progressing, a wait-and-see approach may be best with regular checks to monitor the tumor.

Some spinal tumors respond to radiation and chemotherapy but many are resistant. In many cases, surgical tumor removal is recommended. Fortunately, many spinal tumors can be removed completely with tumor surgery. For a vertebral column tumor, for example, decompression surgery can be used to remove a part of the affected vertebra. If removing the tumor will cause spinal instability, bone grafts and implants can be used.
