What Are Digital X-Rays?

Digital X RaysDigital radiography is a more advanced form of radiography compared to traditional x-rays. Digital x-rays use x-ray-sensitive plates to capture data that’s immediately transferred to a computer without the use of an x-ray film that would need to be manually uploaded. Digital x-rays also use about 80 percent less radiation than traditional X-ray technology for improved safety.

Because digital x-rays can produce more advanced images that are stored digitally, your physician has access to the necessary information to make an accurate diagnosis without worrying about image degradation later. The digital image can be resized to easily see details without distorting the quality.

You can think of the difference between traditional and digital x-rays as the difference between digital cameras and film-based cameras. In the past, you needed to load film and have it developed with no way to preview an image to ensure the shot was correct and at the right exposure. With digital technology, you can immediately view and edit images.
