What Is Achilles Tendon Rupture?
An Achilles tendon rupture is an injury to the tendon at the back of the lower leg that usually occurs in sports. The Achilles tendon connects the muscles at the back of the thigh to the heel bone and it’s the largest tendon in the body. An Achilles tendon rupture can cause very severe pain and affect your ability to walk, jump, and flex your foot. When the Achilles tendon tears, it usually tears around 2″ above the heel bone. This rupture may be partial or complete.
How Much Does Achilles Tendon Rupture Treatment Cost in Orange County, CA?
The cost to treat an Achilles tendon rupture depends on many factors, including the severity of the injury, how recently the injury occurred, and how well your injury responds to conservative treatment. During your first appointment, we will create a tailored treatment plan and review the cost of your care. We accept many forms of insurance as well as financing through CareCredit®.
What Causes Achilles Tendon Rupture?
An Achilles tendon rupture becomes more likely with age, as the tendon gets weaker and thinner over time. This injury is also more likely in people who have tendonitis of the Achilles tendon.
Middle-aged, male “weekend warriors” are at the greatest risk of an Achilles tendon rupture. When a rupture occurs during sports, it usually happens when pivoting, running, or jumping are required. The most common sports associated with Achilles tendon rupture are racquetball, tennis, and basketball.
The tendon can be ruptured during a forceful push-off while the knee is straight, suddenly stepping off a curb, or stumbling and breaking the fall with the foot.
How Is Achilles Tendon Rupture Treated in Los Angeles?
Treating an Achilles tendon injury is designed to restore the tendon’s normal tension and length. This injury often requires a cast or brace to help the tendon heal and slowly stretch back to the normal length. Physical therapy is also a major part of treating a rupture of the Achilles tendon, whether or not surgery is required.
When Achilles tendon surgery is required, it may be performed in one of two ways: with an open incision at the back of the leg or with several small incisions. The procedure will involve suturing the tendon together. The risk of a re-rupture after surgical repair of the Achilles tendon is low.
A rupture of the Achilles tendon requires prompt treatment to restore normal function to the tendon.
